and just three points in nevada where the debates are taking place tonight. with both romney and the president wrapping up final debate practice yesterday, joe biden was in north carolina and paul ryan in iowa. they traded jabs over the middle class. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been buried. we agree. >> mitt romney is under pressure to give more details into both his tax reform proposal and plans for the middle class. yesterday, he finally offered up an idea saying in order to pay for his reform each taxpayer would have a limit on how much they could deduct. the number he threw out was $17,000 and compared that to a bucket saying you can take whatever deductions you want but once you hit $17,000 that's it. we heard his plan for undocumented immigrants. he would not revoke the temporary limitations adopted by the president but if elected there would be no more protections. we're coming back after the break. >> i wouldn't be where i am today if it wasn't for capella university. i go to work every day and know that i
for that debate and does that open the play book for the obama camp to see what mayor romney is going to talk about at that foreign policy debate? >> -- what mitt romney is going to talk about. >> i think we have heard many of these arguments before, after , governorattacke romney came out and made these points pretty forcefully. from what we have seen, today's speech is going to be a maybe even stronger assertion of his views of those issues. having been on the campaign trail and talk to voters that some of the paul ryan events, it's an argument that has resonated, particularly when it comes to things like foreign aid and how the country is spending its resources. exactly see the relationship being a reciprocal one. that could also be one area the romney campaign is looking for when they decided to hold this speech. >> i want to read a piece of the speech that was released yesterday. let us know what is new from this -- host: are these new ideas are things he has talked about on the campaign trail before? guest: it is what he has said before. goes into a little more details on the policies h
and new york. that's mitt romney's debate, not mine. i'll go take it to the democrats and we'll work it out. but even the tax policy center that claims this would be a 5 trillion dollar tax cut for rich has now said -- has now admitted well, we weren't calculating all the deductions he was taking. we were guessing which deductions woe eliminate. this is an opinion about what the result -- he would eliminate. this is an opinion about what the result will be. republicans have a different opinion about what the result will be. >> i want to open the phone lines. or send us a tweet at c-span wj and we'll put your e-mail address if that is your preferred way of communication. ann cultler stay with us until 8:35. the new jobs' numbers are out we want the chance to look at those and get her reaction to the political import of those. we should spend a few minutes on your book before we get to cal calls. what are you -- what's your thesis with this book? what are you trying to do with it? >> um, the white guilt has never gotten anything good for america. it's always been a disaster and driven
as romney explained very clearly in the debate the other night, no, i am not cutting taxes on the richest. what i want to do is lower rates overall by 20%. and eliminate loopholes, deductions, exemptions, that sort of thing. which i think all serious people who look at the tax code think needs to be done. it's the richest of all by the way who take the most advantage of tax deductions. that is a fairer way of looking at t maybe if you have a lot of deductions you don't want to get rid of them. but you always feel like with reductions, somebody else is getting a better deal than you are. mitt romney hasn't specified which deductions. i can think of a few we should get rid of like deductions for state and local taxes. why should the rest of the country be supporting the high tax rates of california and new york? but anyway, that's my position, not mitt romney's and he also explained in the debate, this is my general proposal. we'll argue about it. we'll talk about it. i'll take it to the democrats and we'll work it out. but even the tax policy center that claims this would be a $5 trillion
package and said he would go to the debate unless there was a bailout package. so in the middle of all this, we didn't know if john mccain would show up on the night. so that's september. and that romney has now had a tough month. it is september. people ask mala time, what do you think? what is going to happen? i would say it's pretty early. if you think about it, the 18 day sound like a lifetime to me. so he's got two lifetimes. it was like 40 days. a lot can happen on the campaign trail between now and the end.
